Year Round School
The Sparta Board of Education adopted a balanced calendar or a Year Round School pilot program at Maplewood Elementary School for the current 2017-18 school year. This is part of the School Board’s Strategic Plan: “Expand learning environments to meet the diverse needs of students and their families.” Students who will be in kindergarten through grade three for the 2018-19 school year are being sought to continue this voluntary pilot program.
The enrollment form can be found at the bottom of this page along with additional handouts of information. Currently, students outside of the Maplewood attendance area will need to be able to provide transportation during the approximately 45-day summer quarter. The calendar would be a “multi-track” – one section of Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, and 3rd Grade (or multi-age rooms K/1st and/or 2nd/3rd depending on enrollment) on the balanced calendar, all other classrooms of kindergarten through 3rd grade would be on the traditional calendar.
The Maplewood pilot program calls for a rotation of approximately 45 days of school starting in September, followed by approximately 15 school days off. There are 21 weekdays off after the 4th quarter in August 2019. By shortening the breaks between sessions, students should retain skills and information better and less time is spent on review – stopping the “summer slide.” In addition, during the 15-day break, there will be five consecutive days of intersession opportunities for academic support and enrichment. A student would not need to wait until Camp Sparta summer school to receive the immediate interventions or extensions needed. With a balanced calendar, we can be responsive to students’ needs in a more timely manner.
With a balanced 45-15 calendar, students do not have to go to school any more days than they would with a traditional calendar – traditional and balanced school calendars each have 176 days of school. Students will have the same amount of days off only there would be four breaks throughout the year rather than one long summer break. Students follow the same curriculum and are provided with the same educational programs.
We understand a balanced calendar may not be an option for your family for a number of reasons. However, all students could benefit from a balanced calendar and it may be a great option for some families. The Year Round program at Maplewood is another voluntary option for families, and not a district-wide initiative.
