Read to Lead

The Sparta Area School District received a one-year $30,000 Read to Lead Development Fund Grant to increase Pre-Kindergarten students’ emergent literacy prior to attending the Sparta Charter Pre-Kindergarten program and to supplement the curriculum during the Pre-K to third grade window with highly effective, evidence based programming that increases alphabetics, oral language, print knowledge and phonological processing. The Sparta Area School District Read to Lead Project: Spartan Jump Start to Early Literacy was a two-piece early literacy imitative that included increased efforts toward parental engagement and education, and a defined intervention curriculum for our District’s youngest learners. Spartan Jump Start to Early Literacy targeted parents and caregivers as well as classroom instruction and provides young learners with an early literacy foundation before they enter the classroom to help them develop skills needed to be successful in pre-kindergarten and beyond. It also recognizes the parents as a child’s first teacher.

Funds purchased Headsprouts and Earobics for use in the classroom, and developed interactive shared book reading videos that model this early intervention. Annotated copies of these high-interest children’s books are available at the Administration and Education Center, 201 E. Franklin St. Videos can be viewed below.

While the grant funding from the Read to Lead Development Fund was for the 2015-16 school year, the Sparta Area School District knows that the impact of this project will continue through the purchased curriculum and these videos and developed materials.
