UPDATE AS OF 2/8/19: In addition to the Weather Make-Up Plan below, we will now be adding April 18th as a weather make-up day. Please make sure the following weather make-up days are on your calendar:
- March 15, 2019
- April 18, 2019
- April 23, 2019
Due to the recent string of cancelled school days due to inclement weather, the Sparta Area School District will implement the following plan to ensure instructional time for the 2018-2019 school year.
The District’s goal is to avoid extending the school year past the current June 7th end date. By approaching our make up time using a few different strategies, we believe we can realize this goal.
Please note that the District was able to compensate for the non-school days on September 6 – 7, 2018, due to busing issues, with minutes that were already built into the district calendar. The remaining days off that we need to account for include 9-5-18 (flooding), 1-22-19 (snow day), 1-28-19 (snow day) and 1-29-19, 1-30-19, 1-31-19 (cold weather days).
The first two weather days were built into the district calendar, meaning they do not need to be made up. The following two weather days were indicated on the district calendar on an “as needed” basis, those days are March 15, 2019 and April 23, 2019. We will now be holding school on those days, March 15 and April 23, to make up for the January 28 and 29 closures.
Next, we must look at how many instructional minutes are needed to be in compliance with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Maplewood and Lakeview both have a 6 hour deficit due to having a lunch/recess period that is 5 minutes longer than the rest of the elementary schools. Adjusting the lunch/recess period from 35 minutes to 30 minutes for the rest of the school year will address this deficit. All of the other schools are currently in compliance.
Although we currently meet the DPI minutes of instruction requirement, we do not have any extra time available. In order to ensure that we have enough minutes for any additional late starts or snow days, we are extending the school day at the following schools by 5 minutes at the beginning of the day starting Wednesday, February 6, 2019 and lasting through the end of this school year:
- Sparta High School
- High Point High School
- Maplewood Elementary
- Lakeview Montessori
- Lawrence-Lawson Elementary
- Southside Elementary
- Cataract Elementary
Meadowview Intermediate and Middle Schools will not have any adjustment to their bell schedule as they already have enough minutes.
The bus schedule will not change. All bus times will stay the same.
This extension will enable us to take up to 3 additional 2-hour late starts or 1 additional snow day. We will set aside April 18 as a potential make up day as well. That day will only be a school day if it is necessary to do so.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we make the necessary adjustments to our calendar.
