Governance/Structure

The Sparta Montessori Schools Governance Board will have authority for independent control of the charter school, its mission, vision, goals and educational program, including curriculum, student progress, and action plans for improvement. While the authorizer, the Sparta Board of Education, is by Wisconsin charter school law the Sparta Montessori Schools fiscal agent, the Sparta Montessori Schools Governance Board shall oversee: budgeting of discretionary funds, charter grant funds (when available), fundraising and/or foundation donations amounts; provide hiring and staffing recommendations to the Board of Education; and review of lead administrator performance. The Governance Board will seek to make decisions through consensus, carefully considering the views of parents, students, and community members with input from administration and district staff as necessary. Each Governance Board member will have a full and equal vote on all matters put to vote.

The Sparta Montessori Schools Governance Board shall consist of at least five members. Each August the Governance Board shall elect the Board president for that school year. Terms of office shall be three years on a rotating basis, to avoid a large turnover in any given year.  Board members may request to serve an additional term with the approval of the majority of the board. The Sparta Montessori Schools Principal and Sparta Montessori Schools’ staff members shall serve advisors to the Governance Board. The Governance Board shall consist of at least two community members and at least three parents. This will facilitate maintaining a healthy balance on the Governance Board and help facilitate community and parent ownership. Each Governance Board member will have a full and equal vote on all matters put to a vote.
