Community Education

The Sparta Community Education Program is an opportunity for all members of the community to engage in lifelong learning.  The program seeks a variety of lifelong learning opportunities to support the interests and educational needs of the community.  Classes are usually taught in small groups. The Sparta Community Education Program encourages community members to offer suggestions of class interests and teaching strategies. 

Current Offerings

Dog Obedience Classes: Classes begin Wednesday, March 4, 2020, and will continue every Wednesday for 8 weeks (Puppy Preschool is 6 weeks).

Location: Meadowview Intermediate School
Cost: $45/person includes materials and a snack

SafeSitter is designed to prepare students ages 11-14 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting.  The Instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises. Students will practice rescue skills including choking rescue.

Must Pre-Register by February 7, 2020. Spaces are limited.

When: Wednesdays  December 4th - February 26th (no league December 25th or January 1st)

Time: 6:30 - 7:30 pm 

Location: Sparta High School AA Gym

Cost: $20/person

Students will learn basic volleyball skills, rules of the game, teamwork and communication. This class also allows students to stay involved in a sport they may already enjoy playing, meeting new people, and learning how to play with unfamiliar people

The purpose of the Walkers Program is to provide an indoor site for community members to exercise, while also keeping everyone safe while student-athletes may be in the hallways for practice.  Registered walkers will be given a badge that opens door E at Sparta High School on weekdays between 4:00-9:00 p.m.

Date: Monday, January 6, 2020 and Monday, January 13, 2020
Time: 5:30 - 7:00 pm
Location: Lawrence-Lawson Elementary Room 20
Cost: $10/person

In this 2 session class led by teacher Monica Treu-Olbert, students will learn to do basic drawing of an image, tape down paper, layer colors from lights to darks, and learn techniques such as wet on wet and wash. No experience or supplies needed.
